“It is not enough to be good. Altrusans must be good for something.”
— from the Principles of Altrusa by Mamie L. Bass

Altrusa is a service organization dedicated to building a stronger community through Service, Partnership, Leadership, Friendship & Fun.

Altrusa is for Service

Altrusa Foundation has taken on some major projects, all of which benefit the local Gig Harbor community, including:

  • Pledging $100,000 over ten years to furnish the Community Kitchen for the new Boys & Girls Club of Gig Harbor. We have finished our final year and are ready for our "Burn the Mortgage" party on September when we present the Boys & Girls Club with the final $10,000 check!
  • Providing an annual donation of $2,000 in scholarship funding for the Peninsula Youth Orchestra.
  • Contributing thousands of dollars worth of school supplies and basic clothing to children in need in Peninsula schools.

Altrusa is for Friendship and Fun

Altrusa is not all work and no play! Club members are friends who enjoy organizing parties, tours (including the boat tour shown above), a night out at the movies, or a barbecue in the backyard. Our members attend community events as a group and enjoy everything from ball games with The Chamber of Commerce to the Garden Tour benefiting TCC's Adult Basic Education Program, interclub activities with our sister Puyallup or Olympia Altrusa clubs, and art shows in our neighboring City of Tacoma.

The club welcomes new members, as well as Friends of Altrusa who are willing to help out with our programs and projects.

Altrusa is for the World

Altrusa has chapters all over the world, including England, Ireland, India, and Russia.

In February 2014 the Philippines suffered a devastating hurricane. The Gig Harbor Altrusa group sent many boxes of clothes, kitchenware, and books to one of the smaller islands in the Philippines that was receiving very little aid. The Cabancalan Elementary School was thrilled with the books and encyclopedias in the shipment, as they had lost most of their books in the disaster.

Altrusa Presents Peninsula Youth Orchestra Grant , Scholarship Fund

The Winter Concert of Peninsula Youth Orchestra presented more than just a music performance recital for about 100 students at various levels of learning.

The group also received a grant of $900 from Altrusa Foundation of Gig Harbor, and Altrusa International Foundation. The grant is to be used to replace about 30 music stands that have served the orchestra since it formed about 15 years ago.

Funds for the grant were obtained through an application to the international parent group of the local Altrusa Foundation. Altrusa of Gig Harbor has been a supporter of the local Youth Orchestra since it was formed in the late 1990s, and has provided annual scholarships since its beginning.

Inspiration for the private teaching orchestra’s formation came from a group of parents who wished to correct the lack of any string music program in the local school system. Since its beginning, PYO has gone from a few students at a single performance level to over 100 students performing at four levels, and including specialty Chamber and Quartets for advanced students.

As an added bonus, Altrusa announced the establishment of the Andrea Bryant Memorial Scholarship Fund within the Altrusa Foundation. Bryant was one the original teaching staff for the first orchestra, who passed away just after Christmas.

Donations to the fund can be made here at the Altrusa website on the Peninsula Youth Orchestra page.
