Empty Bowls is "an international grassroots effort to raise both money and awareness in the fight to end hunger." Here in Gig Harbor, it is an event, organized by Altrusa Club & Foundation of Gig Harbor, to raise funds for Food Scholarships for children in our community whose summers may be periods of hunger.
In our own community of Gig Harbor, Altrusa's Empty Bowls project is creating a fund to provide summer lunches to some of the 1 in 4 children who receive food support during school months, but none during the summer. That means about 2200 children may be going hungry every summer. Altrusa Foundation has established a "Food Scholarship Fund" to provide summer lunches to children who qualify under FDA guidelines at the local Boys & Girls Club. Download the Empty Bowls FAQs here.

Without a summer lunch program to fill the gap, as many as 2,200 school-age children who qualify for free or reduced price lunches in Peninsula School District are at risk of having no food support during the summer months. Altrusa and the Empty Bowls event are raising funds to provide Food Scholar-ships through the Boys & Girls Club.
Empty Bowls diners purchase a simple meal of soup and bread, choose an artisan-made bowl, and take home the bowl to remind them that there is hunger in their community.
